After the feast, one of Eleanor’s ladies helped me find a room in the castle. Alone, as Rob was still with Richard and the other men, planning tomorrow’s festivities and the coming siege in equal measure. Or perhaps just avoiding me. At the same time, trying to act as a proper lady had exhausted me and I wasn’t even sure if it was helping. I let my shoulders sag, thinking of Rob and all the things I wished I could do differently. Then I saw a familiar face among the girls who came to attend me. “Aggie? You came with Rob?”

The dark-haired maid laughed. “Came with him? He came by himself. John wanted some of our group to go with him, but we could barely keep up.” But then her eyes narrowed as she searched the room. “I expected him to be at your side at once.”

I shook my head. “He’s angry at me. I know I left him with a mess and little to no warning, so it’s not like I truly blame him. I just thought it would be best if I waited for him to come to me, but it’s taking much longer than I would like.” And I might be better off hitting him so we could have a proper fight about it. Something we might have done when we were children.

But then, I didn’t want a child’s relationship with my husband anymore. And I couldn’t think of another womanly way to force his heart to mine, not as Aggie made a series of sympathetic noises and helped me dress down for the night. But she had given me some comfort at least. She said that Rob had wanted to see me. So, I would have to wait as Eleanor had advised.

I just hoped it would not take too long.
